GDOT, Cavnue to Deploy Advanced Roadway Technology Near Port of Savannah

The partnership highlights Georgia's ongoing commitment to leveraging innovation for safer, more efficient transportation infrastructure, particularly along critical freight corridors.

Atlanta, GA – May 28, 2025 The Georgia Department of Transportation (GDOT) has awarded a contract to Cavnue, a leading smart roadway technology developer, to launch a project aimed at enhancing safety and efficiency on State Route 307 (SR 307), a key freight corridor connecting the Port of Savannah - the second largest container port on the U.S. East Coast and a critical gateway for global trade. The project, known as the SR 307 Smart Freight Corridor, will initially focus on deploying Cavnue's integrated technology platform along selected segments of SR 307 between Interstate 16 (I-16) and State Route 25 (SR 25)/Coastal Highway at the Port of Savannah’s Garden City Terminal.

"This project reflects our commitment to embracing innovative transportation solutions that strengthen Georgia’s freight and logistics infrastructure," said Russell McMurry, Commissioner, Georgia Department of Transportation. "Together, we’re demonstrating how intelligent infrastructure can support the safety and reliability of one of the busiest truck corridors in the state."

Cavnue’s integrated platform, combining roadside hardware, digital infrastructure, and intelligent software, will dramatically enhance visibility of the road, generating actionable insights at lane-level precision that enable faster incident detection and response, ultimately enhancing safety and managing traffic/congestion for all road users, with a particular focus on the heavy commercial truck traffic characteristic of the Port area. This project will allow GDOT and local private industry, including trucking and logistics companies, to experience the effectiveness of the technology to ultimately enable expansion to connecting corridors.

"Infrastructure needs to work in tandem with technology to create a seamless, connected transportation system," said Tyler Duvall, CEO and Co-Founder of Cavnue. "With this GDOT project, we are deploying technology designed to deliver immediate safety and efficiency benefits today, while also building the foundation for the increasingly connected and automated vehicles of the future, particularly in the critical area of freight movement."

Through this partnership, Cavnue will deploy its Integrated Platform to (1) observe roadway activity in real time, (2) generate insights about traffic conditions and potential hazards, such as roadway debris, vulnerable road users, or incidents, using advanced data analytics, and (3) share those insights with GDOT and connected vehicles, including commercial trucks. This infrastructure-enabled perspective enhances vehicle awareness beyond onboard sensors and equips GDOT with a real-time, predictive view of conditions on SR 307.

This project underscores Georgia’s commitment to leveraging technological innovation to enhance its transportation infrastructure. This is particularly crucial in supporting its role as a major national and international logistics hub centered around the Port of Savannah. As the fourth-largest seaport in North America, handling cargo from over 160 countries, the Port of Savannah is a powerhouse for the state’s economy and a critical node in global supply chains. With the Georgia Ports Authority undertaking a $1.9 billion master plan to further expand capacity and meet growing demand, ensuring efficiency and safety of vital arteries like SR 307 through smart infrastructure is paramount. By exploring and investing in projects like the SR 307 Smart Freight Corridor, GDOT is advancing a safer, more resilient freight network to support the state’s long-term economic growth and global competitiveness.

Cavnue is unlocking smart roads for an automated future and works closely with State Departments of Transportation across the country, including Michigan, Texas, and now Georgia. Developed in close collaboration with public agencies, community stakeholders, and private industry, Cavnue’s technology is designed to improve safety, reliability, and operational intelligence on today’s roads while preparing infrastructure for the autonomous transportation of tomorrow.
